THE COMPOUND by Gloria Shepherd |
You're hearing music composed especially for The Compound
Original
Score by Musical Composer/Producer L. Johnson
especially for Gloria Shepherd's novel: The Compound.
Compound Theme (How the Music Came To Be)
In 2001 I received a phone call at my
home, which at the time was in Springfield, Virginia, from a young man-Laban
Johnson. He told me he read The Compound and enjoyed it so much that he
wrote a musical composition for the story. He said he hoped I'd use it
as the theme song for when "The Compound is made into a movie."
Laban didn't say "will" or "if" the story would ever be made into a
movie, but when. This is exactly the type of response I get from all my
readers-"We can't wait to see The Compound when it's made into a movie.
We can see the story taking place on the screen as we read from page to
page."
As soon as he offered to send me the music in CD form, I naturally
jumped at the chance to hear it. I didn't know what to expect since
Laban Johnson is a young African-American hip-hop composer, who is also
the CEO and founder of a fledgling music company. At the time of this
conversation he was only twenty years old.
To my complete surprise and amazement the magnificent musical
composition you hear is what he envisioned as he read The Compound. To
me, this is one of the most cherished compliments any author could hope
to receive from a reader.
