Preface - The world was facing a new reality in the fall of 1987. The winds of change were rapidly sweeping across Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the U.S.S.R. A thirst for freedom-a thirst for a democratic society-was rocketing through these newly impassioned republican societies. The United States military was also facing a new reality. The necessity of, and respect for, elite, covert military units began to take the forefront in the eyes of not only the State and Defense Departments, but also the American public as a whole. Additionally, in the latter part of 1987 the accepted sexual mores of American society were also about to change permanently. The conventional norms of the one man, one woman, relationship were about to be tested, for better or worse, as one entered the world of Love, Lust & Terror-Tales From the Compound. Memorable Moments from Love, Lust & TerrorCarly felt completely left out. Whenever she attempted to point this fact out to Ken, he always said, "Honey, you're being silly. You're the most important person in the world to me. You know how much I love you. Stop worrying." She knew she wasn't the most important person in his life any longer. She felt as if she'd been replaced. She thought she was going mad. Was she invisible? Could no one hear her? She stared blankly at the nanny and left the room. After closing the door behind her, she leaned against it. She could feel her body shake. She was scared. She truly didn't know if she was imagining all this was taking place, or if it actually was. If it was, then her worst nightmare was coming true. She was alone. Russell continued to stare at her breasts. He could feel the heat emanating from her body. It wasn't the heat from the hot Texas day either. It was the heat of passion coming from a woman who wanted him to take her. He'd wanted to have sex with her for as long as he could remember. She was the most sensual woman he had ever met. But he never allowed his feelings for her to show. He could never imagine betraying Ken-his lifelong partner and the man he called "brother"-in that manner. When Ken reached the bottom third of the stairway, he stopped dead in his tracks. At first he thought he was looking at a scene from a bad movie, but he wasn't. His closest friend in the world and the woman he loved more than anyone in the world were screwing each other! Like a plane exploding in mid-air, he felt his entire world come crashing down. In his eyes, the couple continued to move in slow motion, like a movie reel crawling along one frame at a time. He kept staring, as his wife sat up on the pool table, looked over at him, and tried to pull her short skirt around her hips. She barely managed to cover her crotch. He could see her mouth falling open from surprise. "But what about me, Ken? I won't be fine without you. What will I do?" He sneered. "Oh, I'm sure you'll be fine, too, honey. Once I'm gone, you'll be alone here with about twenty-four men. You can screw your brains out with all of them, if that's what you want." He took his suitcase and left the room. Carly paced around the house with little Danny clinging to her chest, resting in his baby sling. She hadn't stopped crying since Ken left. The more she thought of him, the more she held the baby close to her. She tried pretending the three of them were together. She tried pretending Ken would soon come walking through the front door, as he had every night. Night fell upon the ranch house. Ken never came through the door.
