"I received my 'Baxter' book today and must say it captured a piece of my heart. What a wonderful gift this will be, and I'm so excited to give it as a wedding present. Thank you, Carollee, so much for all you do." --Robbin D. (Ohio) $10 from the sale of each book to be donated to Hurricane Rita or Hurricane Katrina Animal Rescue
The
Life & Times of Baxter the Bat Dog! The Baxter short stories are based on the sometimes touching, sometimes suspenseful, but always exciting true-life adventures of a tiny dog with a big heart. The
mission of this children’s book is to educate children that even a
humble, unassuming animal (such as a pet dog) can overcome life’s trials
and lead a fruitful, productive life. These little children’s stories
emphasize that life—in any form, whether human or animal—is valuable
and reinforce the concept that all God’s creatures have their own place
and time on Earth.
Although
the three illustrated children’s stories vary in theme, each is
factually based. Each highlights the basic themes that are so important to
all good children’s books—being a loyal friend, sharing one’s toys
or “goodies” with others, and—no matter how sad you might feel
sometimes—always try to maintain a good sense of humor. Similar to the
wonderful theme Disney stories have presented for generations! Volume
One: Baxter
the Bat Dog is abandoned by his family and struck by a car. Veterinarians
rush to mend his broken legs. A TV station puts Baxter on the local news,
announcing that he needs a new home. Merry Jones, a cheery young woman
with two cats, is chosen as Baxter’s new guardian. Volume
Two: In
this illustrated children’s story with a Halloween theme—Baxter is
dressed as a Bat Dog and spends Halloween with Merry’s niece and nephew.
They attend the school’s Halloween party and other fun outdoor events.
Baxter generously shares his goodies with his cat friends—Cinnamon and
Pearly-Mae. Volume Three: In this illustrated Christmas story—Baxter and the family cats decide what presents to give their “guardians” for Christmas. A snowstorm prevents Baxter from digging out his surprise bone gift. But afterwards, Baxter discovers a miraculous gift that demonstrates his devotion and love.
ABOUT
THE REAL BAXTER
We
first saw Baxter as “Pet of the Week” on a Denver, Colorado television
station. A local humane group rescued him after he was abandoned on the
city’s streets and then struck by a car. Veterinarians rushed to save
him and successfully mended his two broken hind legs. Even though Baxter
had a permanent limp as a result of this accident, it didn’t dampen his
vibrant enthusiasm for life.
Baxter traveled with me across the country twice and, because of
his small size, was allowed in the airplane’s main cabin, where he
entertained both passengers and crewmembers. We spent a wonder-filled
Halloween together, going trick or treating and riding the “spooky
Halloween train.”
Baxter did bring me his now-famous Christmas present as described
in Volume 3 and featured on www.bestfriends.org/members/Baxter.htm
Anyone who met Baxter—whether in the park, on the beach, or
simply on the street—always stopped to admire and pet him. His bright,
happy face and shiny black and white coat caught everyone’s attention.
Although no longer with us, Baxter will forever be in our hearts.
